Poker is basically a game that involves lots of strategies and some quick, clever thinking. Poker is rightly termed to be a hard profession that leads to an easy and fast earning of cash. Experts have rightly termed poker to be a changing game, constantly evolving from time to time. To some it is a mathematical game, to others a game of luck or a game of skill. So the players need to be good with numbers and math. A good reader of human minds often makes a good poker player.

Each game has its unique rules and regulations to be followed and therefore requires specific strategies. However there are certain general poker strategies that are to be known to the players before playing a poker game. These are:-
- A person has to be good with math and numbers because playing poker (any variant) involves the number game.
- Poker games have been termed as constantly changing. Therefore, players need to be disciplined enough and keep their calm. If a player panics and finds himself/herself in utter confusion, he/she should never try to reveal their dismal positions and hence give the opponents a reason to celebrate.
- A keen observer of human nature is considered to be an added advantage. The slightest hand movement of the opponents might reveal before the player as to what card his/her opponent has decided to play.
- A person must be thorough with the terms involved with any poker game viz. – raise, fold, hands, blinds etc. he/she must also be well aware of the signs and symbols involved and have a thorough learning of the card ranking systems.
- It will be an added advantage if the techniques of deception and bluffing can be mastered. Both the tricks will force your opponent to play a card in a different manner than he would have decided to play earlier.
- Sitting arrangements matter when it comes to playing poker. This is because the person who will play his card at last actually gets to see what cards have been played by his other opponents.
- If a player has access to the best hands, he/she should look forward to increase the stakes higher. This would allow them to win a bigger jack pot.
In short, the above strategies are general poker strategies which if followed thoroughly can lead a player to get the better hand (if not the best) and stand a chance to win huge profits. Along with these general strategies there are specific strategies for different variant of poker games.
