Omaha Poker Basics

Plenty of Poker GamesOmaha poker is a poker game that involves community cards. The Omaha poker is a variant of Texas Hold’em poker game. The game involves forming a five card hand.

Players are dealt four cards each (faced down). Five cards are dealt on the board (faced up). A player needs to form a five card combination using the cards in hand and on the board. The cards in hand are called hole cards and those on the board are called community cards. Omaha is sometimes called different names such as omaha holdem or omaha hi low, these are simply variations.

Playing Omaha poker requires different approach and therefore Hold’em players often find themselves into confusion. The first and foremost rule that an Omaha poker player should remember is that, when a player attempts to form a five card hand, he or she must use two cards from the four card held in hand and three cards dealt in the board. Other than this no other five card formation is allowed.

After the cards are dealt, the players on the left of the dealer call for the small blind and the big blind. As in other poker games, the value of the small blind is half the value of the big blind. After the bets are placed, three community cards are dealt on the board with their face up. This is followed by a second betting round. The second betting is followed by a fourth card being dealt on board (faced up). A third round of betting is followed and the fifth or the final card is dealt (faced up). A final round of betting takes place and the players reveal the best five hand combination.

There are three types of Omaha poker games. They are

1. Pot limit Omaha poker – here player can bet exactly the amount that is in the pot (pot means jack pot)
2. Limit Omaha poker- where the betting amounts are limited i.e. decided during each rounds of betting
3. No limit Omaha poker- where a player can bet any amount up to the amount of chips he/she is holding.

During the showdown, if more than one player is remaining after the final betting round, the player to place the bet last, reveals his/her cards in hand. If he/she has the best five-card hand, he/she is the clear winner of the jackpot. However if two or more players possess the same card hand, then the jackpot is divided equally among them.

Providing for high stakes and huge bets, Omaha poker has gained a massive fan following worldwide.
