History of Texas Holdem

The most popular card game of all times is poker. There are many varieties of poker that are played all around the world. One of the favorite variations of poker is Texas Holdem. It is found in all the casinos both online and land based and is one of the most played casino games. There are many interesting stories regarding the origin of Texas Holdem.

It is believed by most people when asked that this variation of poker was first played in Robstown in Texas during the first half of the 19th century. Because if the simplicity of the game and the excitement offered, it soon began to spread throughout Texas and gradually more and more people began to take up this game.

It was during the late 1960s that the game was introduced in the casinos of Las Vegas by Crandell Addington, Amarillo Slim and Doyle Brunson who were a group of enthusiastic card players. During the initial days a casino called the Golden Nugget Casino was the only place where the players were offer Texas Holdem. But the game could not reach the mass audience because the game rooms in the Golden Nugget were not up to the standard. As a result many people avoided playing at that casino.

Slowly other casinos like the Dunes Casino opened its door to Texas Holdem and people began to pour in to experience this new form of poker. In 1970 Benny and Jack Binion started the World Series in poker where Texas Holdem was given a lot of importance. It was from this point onwards that the popularity of the games began to grow at a rapid pace. This is evident from the fact that in the first World Series there were only 8 players while in the year 2002 there were around 800 players.

In the present day thanks to the introduction of the internet and the online casinos, not only the popularity of the game has increased tremendously but it has also become more accessible. People now no longer need to travel to an actual land based casino to enjoy the game; they can do so easily from the comforts of their home. More and more Holdem tournaments are held all around the world and everyday more new players are taking up this game. Numerous books have been written on various aspects of this game by the professional players like Doyle’s the ‘Super System’. To keep the game interesting, new features are sometimes added by the casinos from time to time.
