How to Play Badugi Poker

Badugi poker is one of the most unusual versions of the online poker games in that the aim is to hold the lowest possible hand. As with all poker games the aim is to win the pot (money or chips) from the other players by either having the lowest hand or bluffing them in to folding their cards. Learning how to play Badugi poker is fairly easy once you understand the rules and the value of the badugi poker hands.

Plenty of Poker GamesThe Start of the Game:
The dealer is normally the first person seated at the table and the position is marked by a dealer button which is a coloured disc. This marker and the deal moves one place to the left after every completed round of the game. The player immediately to the left of the dealer places a small blind in the pot and the person to his left then also places a big blind, usually it is double the small blind, into the pot. This ensures that there is some money in the pot to be played for and it is at this point the dealer starts dealing.

The Cards:
Once the small and big blinds have been places the dealer deals one card face down to each player until all players hold four cards.

The First Round of Betting:
The players look at their cards and then decide whether to Raise or Match the last bet placed, which at the beginning of the game is the big blind, or they might Fold and throw their hand in. The player to the left of the big blind is the first to make the choice. The betting goes around the table until all the players have decided what they want to do and bets have been equalised. If a player decides to raise the big blind the players placing the small and big blinds can equal the Raise if they wish to stay in the game by adding to their original stakes up to the required amount.

The First Draw:
After the first round of betting has been completed each player can choose to exchange none or all of the cards in the hand to try and improve the hand.

The Second Round of Betting:
The first player to the left of the dealer can now decide what action to take by raising, checking or folding. Each remaining player makes the same choice until all participating players have acted.

The Second Draw:
After the second round of betting has been completed each player can choose to exchange none or all of the cards in the hand to try and improve the hand

The Third Round of Betting:
The first active player to the left of the dealer can now decide what action to take by raising, checking or folding. Each remaining player makes the same choice until all participating players have acted.

The Third Draw:
After the third round of betting has been completed each player can choose to exchange none or all of the cards in the hand to try and improve the hand

The Last Round of Betting:
The first active player to the left of the dealer can now decide what action to take by raising, checking or folding. Each remaining player then has the choice of call or fold.

The Showdown:
After all betting has finished the cards are turned face up and the winning hand declared. The lowest possible hand is the winner with Aces counting low. A “badugi” is any four cards of different suits that are not paired.
