« Different Types of Tournaments Badugi Poker » Badugi Poker BlogBasic Rules RefreshedBadugi primarily fits into the draw poker category and is usually not familiar to a majority of poker players. It is fundamentally a four card variation of the lowball poker of triple draw. This type of poker typically uses a betting structure that is very traditional. In Badugi poker, the hand rankings are very different compared to regular poker. Some basic rules of this game are explained below:
Badugi poker hands are very often considered to be rainbow hands. This is due to the fact that they always comprise cards of various ranks and suits. During the conclusion of the drawing rounds and betting sessions, the Badugi player is expected to discard any suited or paired card from his/her hand, leaving 1, 2, 3 or 4 cards of different ranks and suits. As a player of this game, one must remember that any 4 card hand has the power to beat any 3 card one. Any 3 card hand beats a 2 card one and so on.
Yet another vital rule of Badugi is that successful hands in this version of the game are valued quite differently when compared to other regular games of poker. In this game, only the cards having distinct suits and values actually count. Hence duplicates, or dual suits and pairs do not have any real value in a player’s hand. When comparing hands, one must first count the live cards and then the lowest value of the highest possible card. Since the ace is considered low, an ideal winning hand would comprise ace, 2, 3 and 4, all unsuited. Right at the bottom of the scale is the hand containing 4 kings!
